Community councils

About Community Councils

Community Councils in Scotland are unique. They are statutory bodies, with rights and powers granted under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973, the Race Relations Act 2000, The Local Government (Scotland ) Act 2003 and the laws & regulations of the European Parliament. They are not a tier of local councils, nor are they simply voluntary or community bodies.

A Community Councillor has an ethical and legal responsibility to work in the best interest of their community, seeking out and championing the views of constituents and not merely their own personal opinions. The Community Council as a whole must work to express to the local authorities and public authorities the views of the community which it represents.

Community Councils receive no set funding, although Grants are often awarded by the local Council or other government bodies. Community Councillors are not paid for their work but may claim expenses from the Community Council's budget for costs incurred whilst carrying out work for the Community Council.
